PATTON & COOKE CO. - The Path to Success

Customer: Callenberg Engineering

Location: Miami FL, USA
Industry: Industrial

Challenge: To design a coupler system that:
  • provides quick connecting and disconnecting of 11kV, 1500 Amp, shore supply, to the shipboard switchgear
  • provides interlocking to prevent the shipboard power and onshore power from being energized at the same time
  • is a unique and independent 15kV coupler system
  • withstands corrosive environment onboard ocean vessels
  • withstands short-circuit currents of 35kA
  • can be fitted to switchgear onboard the ship
Solution: Utilizing all extraordinary features of the 15kV Coupler System such as corrosion resistant cast aluminum outer castings with polyester powder coatings as well as vacuum cast, non-hydroscopic, silica sand filled thermal setting resin insulators. Designing phase contacts to handle 35kA fault currents. Performing verification tests at an independent test facility.

Product: Equipment Mount Plug, Cable Mount Receptacle and Live-End Cover (Sales are restricted to Callenberg Engineering)

Key applications: The superior features of the equipment mount plug include:
  • custom-designed corrosion resistant aluminum cast components
  • non-hydroscopic phase insulators made from vacuum cast silica sand filled thermal setting resin featuring high dielectric strength
  • multilam band style contact arrangement for high fault current withstand
  • mechanical and electrical interlocking to prevent shore and ship power from being energized at the same time
Benefits: The equipment mount plug offers a variety of benefits:
  • less time and lower costs through connecting shore power to ships switchgear
  • improved safety with mechanical and electrical interlocks
  • compliance with environmental regulations at ocean ports by connecting ships to surplus shore power and this way reducing ships power generating needs (emissions)
  • capability to safely connect to shipboard switchgear with high short-circuit (35kA) potential
